Summer Blossoms Birthday Card

I know I’ve been MIA for the past week or so. I’m hoping to be back to posting regularly next week. Things have been a little hectic. I’m trying to prepare for a Christmas craft fair but I’ve been having a “creativity block” lately. Sometimes I don’t know where to start. So, I decided to re-vamp one of my favourite cards.

To decide what colours I wanted to use, I pulled out my colour coach that Stampin Up just released on July 1st. For those of you who aren’t familiar with it, it has a swatch for every color of cardstock Stampin Up currently offers (core colours and in-colours). On the back of each colour, it shows a couple of colour combinations to try.

I knew that I wanted to start with Melon Mambo so I took a look at the back and it suggested to try Old Olive and Perfect Plum with it.

I used a pencil to help me curl the pedals back on the large flowers. The stamp sets that I used are “Eastern Blooms” and “Sweet Sentiments”.

If you live in Canada and you are interested in purchasing any of the supplies mentioned above, please feel free to send me an e-mail.

As for props…sometimes I find it difficult to use props because of the lack of space I have within the picture, but I really feel that it makes a big difference. In this picture, I used black jelly beans, and an espresso cup and saucer that I just picked up for a local twoonie store.

I think that I’m going to work on a couple of video tutorials this weekend: one video about how I take pictures of my cards, and another video about how to make this card. Hopefully this won’t take long to do. This is going to be my first time making a video. If you have any suggestions for videos that you would like to see on my blog, please comment below!

Have a great weekend! Talk to you soon!

I'm Addicted...

to cupcakes! I’ve been trying to think of ways that I could use more props in my photos. I’ve been making tons of cupcake cards lately and I figured, what would be a better prop to use with a cupcake card than a real cupcake?

So I went down the street on my lunch break to “Cupcakes”. For those of you who don’t live in and around Vancouver, BC, Cupcakes is a shop that sells the most adorable (and not to mention, delicious!) cupcakes. They’ve opened multiple locations over the past 5 years. They even have a show on TV called “Cupcake Girls”. I just LOVE their shops!

I picked up a 12 package of mini-cupcakes and 1 regular-size. It was just my luck that the icing on my full size cupcake got squashed by the box but that’s ok. It’ll still be yummy. I couldn’t use it in my photos though.

Here are some photos that I took of one of my cupcake cards last night. I practically inhaled all of the mini cupcakes after my little photo shoot…with my boyfriend’s help of course! :P

About this card:

Currently, my favourite thing to do on cupcake cards is to put glitter over the icing part. It just kicks it up a notch. This card uses some Stampin up DSP and a couple of the in colors that are still available until the end of this month. Bermuda Bay will be discontinued starting July 1st, and Melon Mambo is being integrated into the core colors.

Thanks for stopping by today. Be sure to come back tomorrow for Wordless Wednesday!

Bright Circle Circus

Posted by Ashley Spencer at Thursday, June 10, 2010 0 comments
Happy Thursday! It seems like this week has just flown by! I’m starting to get more organized. I photographed a few of my new cards last night. I’m trying out creative ways to utilize props. I always flip through card magazines and admire how the cards are photographed. I would love to work for a card magazine :)

Here is one of my new cards. I also listed it on Etsy this morning. I used the Circle Circus stamp set. This is a fun and diverse stamp set. It’s great to make cards for any and all occasions. You could even change the colors and make a nice Christmas card. The colors I used are: Melon Mambo, Tempting Turquoise, Perfect Plum and Certainly Celery.

I used birthday candles as a prop; scattered around the card. I just love how this turned out!

Have a great day! “See” you all tomorrow for Feature Friday!

Choo Choo!

Have you seen the birthday train? This is by far my favourite card I’ve ever made! It’s great for all ages. I used a pink crystal as the cherry on the cupcake, for a little extra detail.

Did you notice the clouds? They were made using liquid appliqué. Liquid appliqué comes in a squeeze pen (similar to glitter pens). What I did was, I made the shape of clouds using the liquid appliqué pen and I waited for it to dry. The package advises 24 hours, but depending on how thick it’s been applied, you can wait as little as a couple hours. You do want it to be completely dry though. After it’s dry, use a heat tool just as you would if you were embossing. The liquid appliqué puff up. Make sure you don’t heat it up too much as the newly formed puff might burn.

Leave a comment below and let me know what you think about my new card!
